Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo: Review

Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo features a moisture-balancing formula, for hair that has been weakened or damaged by color, chemical processing or heat styling. It restores hair by bathing it in a highly concentrated formula rich in antioxidant argan oil, reconstructive keratin and fatty acids. The product restore elasticity, moisture and manageability.
• Color-safe
• Sulfate, phosphate and paraben-free
• Keratin-enriched

After a lot of research, which screwed my brain, here's a complete Ingredient list, sadly, which is no where to be found on their website. I have tried my best to elaborate on each ingredient as well.
  • Water
  • Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate is a cleaning agent that is gentle to skin Also known as MES  However, many sources claim that MES is carcinogenic because it contains surfactants, which can be contaminated with nitrosamines.
  • Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Cocamide MEA ar cleanser and foam booster.
  • Dimethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol silicone
  • glycol distearate to pearlize and to thicken the shampoo
  • sodium lauroyl lactylate emulsifier
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol conditioning agent
  • Argan oil moisturizing oil, fortifies and nourishes hair
  • Avocado oil is a nourishing emollient,  which is extracted from the pulp of the avocado by cold-pressing. Rich in  essential fatty acids and vitamin E,  it softens, conditions  and  strengthens the epidermis. Additionally, has some antioxidant properties.
  • Silk amino acid is a natural water-soluble glycoprotein extracted from raw silk to provide a protective barrier and silky feel to products
  • Keratin Amino Acids powerful moisturiser
  • Hydrolyzed keratin ~ Keratin protein is the strongest of the proteins found in hair products. It strengthens all 3 layers of the hair i.e. Cuticle, Cortex and Medulla. However, its not a permanent ‘fix’ for damaged hair.
  • Rosemary leaf extracts prevents dandruff and increases blood circulation
  • Lavender flower extract antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, cleansing, balancing, and soothing
  • Jojoba seed extract moisturiser
  • Matricaria (Chamomile) flower extract healing and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Butylene Glycol a colorless organic alcohol
  • Propylene Glycol form of mineral oil
  • panthenol conditioner
  • Cetrimonium Chloride antiseptic conditioning agent
  • Trideceth-12 surfactant
  • C12-13 Pareth-23C12-13 Pareth-3 Surfactant - Emulsifying Agent
  • Divinyldimethicone/Dimethicone Copolymer, Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-7 An anti-static agent and film former
  • Sodium PCA Humectant
  • Quaternium-80 silicone based conditioner
  • Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride Antistatic and Hair Conditioning Agent
  • PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate thickener
  • PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides Skin-Conditioning Agent - Emollient; Surfactant - Emulsifying Agent
  • Citric Acid is a weak acid used to adjust the pH scale
  • Sodium Chloride our very own Table Salt used as a thickening agent
  • Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin preservative
  • Caprylyl Glycol humectant and Skin-Conditioning Agent
  • Red 33 (Cl1700), Yellow 5 (Cl 19140) Color
  • Fragrance (Parfum) Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxyisohexyl 3 Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Linalool
  • Alpha isomethyl ionone used as a perfume, It’s been known to irritate the skin and trigger allergic reactions for some people. After evaluating the potential side effects of Alpha-isomethyl Ionone, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) banned the ingredient from being mixed into fragrance products.

Packaging
I loved the packaging. The blue bottle has a nice matte-rubberised finish which I like. The color really brightens up my bathroom.

My Experience
After hearing a lot of good things about this shampoo, I really wanted to give this one a try and see if it stood up to my expectation. I have dry wavy hair, which gets quite unmanageable sometimes and has gone through smoothing and straightening 'n' number of times.

The first thing I noticed about this shampoo is its fragrance. It smells like men's cologne/aftershave which some may not like but I kind of like it. Though its a sulphate-free shampoo, I was quite surprised to see that the shampoo lathers very nicely and also I did not face any problem while washing my oiled hair.

Initially, when I started using the shampoo sans conditioner, my hair felt really rough and dry, I could not even run my fingers through them. But after using it for some more time, I could see the difference, but not as much as I had expected. The results were quite average, not something other shampoos could do. Infact, other shampoos does a better job without me having to pay so much.

The real problem started when I was almost done with the product. It gave me an extremely itchy and irritated scalp, mostly in the crown area and I wanted to scratch my head all the time. Also I started washing my hair at alternate days and the problem worsened. Eventually I stopped using the shampoo and I don't have this problem anymore.

Now, coming back to the ingredients, while the brand stresses upon the presence of argan oil ( MoroccanOil being the brand's name itself ), reconstructive keratin and fatty acids etc, they are not the main ingredient of the shampoo. It contains tons of mild surfactants and conditioners. The SHAMPOO is sulphate, phosphate and paraben free, but contain silicones which are not water soluble. Non-soluble silicones require the help of sulfate shampoos and conditioners in order to remove the silicone coating from the hair. So, what is the point of it being sulphate-free at the first place??

Many ingredients in this shampoo are classified as irritants. For eg. Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Propylene Glycol, Alpha isomethyl ionone, Chlorphenesin etc ( You can do your research ).

All in all I am highly disappointed with this Brand and its shampoo with a never-ending ingredient list. I would prefer to buy the organic ingredients present in this shampoo separately and use it in my hair mask instead.

My Rating
